I worked in the adult entertainment industry (web-side) from 2001 to August 2011. I’m just a regular guy who had some irregular jobs over the years. If you’re not in the adult entertainment industry then you’re likely to immediately brand me with some preconceived notion that society has been feeding to you throughout your whole life via a constant bombardment of TV, Music, Movies and “News.” Put those notions aside and ready a little here, or hold onto them as you move along to the next website.

Here’s a short version of where I’ve been. I graduated from Computer Graphic Design in 1997 and immediately moved into Web Design. I spent some time in production, design, teaching and eventually became a Manager of various people and departments over the years.

In 2004 I was recruited by the owners of Webnovas Technologies Inc. to work on their affiliate program. We knew each other from the first adult business we all worked at in 2001. So they now created an affiliate program and were looking for a Designer. They abandoned the program in favor of creating XTube.com – the first adult tube site. I learned a lot there by becoming responsible for numerous roles – all at the same time.

A good friend of mine likes to tell his WOW (Warcraft) friends (he goes by Duglarg and Crazed) that his friend (me) invented XTube, and of course they never believe him. That’s ok – it’s mostly true because YouTube was online for 3 months before XTube went online, lol. The invention story is simple: The 3 of us saw YouTube and we immediately wondered how they did it, and more importantly, how could they afford all that bandwidth!? While my bosses were worrying about all the roadblocks  involved with making an adult version I went ahead and built the first mockup and spec-sheet. It took them few more weeks before they finally agreed that we should build it. So as much as I want to claim the invention story, it was a joint effort, and I was always just an employee.

I left Webnovas in 2007 to work for another startup, on a number of projects, that were ultimately terminated without notice or explanation. That fiasco lead to sudden unemployment after a year and a half of wasted development. Not very exciting at all.

At this point in my career all of my contacts were in the adult industry, which lead me to another adult company. Another tube-styled project: xLive.com. I was with them from May 2009 to July 2010 when I left Canada for a while. When I returned to Canada I resumed my role until August 2011.

There’s no effective way to flaunt your adult industry background when looking for work in the mainstream, but I can proudly say that I created several policies and procedures aimed at protecting minors from sexual exploitation and predation. When we created XTube we weren’t thinking about all the stupid things that people would upload, and how people would exploit an adult social network, and since the owners were buried in code all the time, it was up to me to handle it. As a parent myself I naturally have an eye out for kids and kid-safety.

On one hand I am sickened by the things I had to see when dealing with protecting minors from exploitation and predation, but on the other hand I am glad that it was me because I adamantly pursued the issue of protecting kids. I am not going to get into details – hopefully ever – but I will say that I told my bosses, “We’re doing it my way, or I’m walking out!” There was no way I was going to allow any wiggle room for kids to be taken advantage of on a site I worked for. Period. So in the long run the system I set up worked. It was based on policies all staff had to adhere to as well as having custom administrative tools added to the site-admin area specifically for finding, deleting, banning, etc.

If you’re a parent you might want to ask me what you can do to help minimize the risk of sexual exploitation of your children. I’ve dealt with this issue first hand, and you need to know what I know. That’s an issue too large for this page so feel free to contact me with questions and concerns.
