LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles City Council, 9-1, approved a new ordinance Tuesday requiring that all adult film actors wear condoms when filming within city limits.
Forcing adult actors to wear condoms in all their content shoots… One one hand it’s a good thing, while on the other it’s not.
This is the typical response one expects from government:
1.) over react,
2.) stick its nose in the business of others,
3.) levy fines.
I don’t have the solutions, but I do have some thoughts and questions that I think are part of this discussion as it unfolds around the industry…
I think we all can easily agree that spreading HIV is a serious matter and should not be supported on any level.
I think we can also easily agree that performers should take great care of their sexual health to be certain that they’re healthy and not spreading illness.
But we have to approach this from where we live and work – reality. There is no reasonable way to enforce measures like this and, like always, the only thing that they can do is create scary deterrents like high fines or jail time.
I do not think there is as much of an argument for the performer to wear it out of comfort. If they don’t want to wear it and they’re allowed to take it off, then they will. Some people are allergic to latex and other chemicals too. And the viewers do not want to see the condoms either, so if there are choices between condom videos and bare back videos, they’re going to lean towards their interests, and the sales for the studios in LA will be impacted.
If performers were to use a standardized testing system before and after each shoot then the risk would go down, but the wait between shoots would increase, which translates into less work/pay/sales/revenues.
In my opinion, the health is the issue at hand here, but that issue crosses over into profitability as sales and production capabilities are affected by this decision. I suspect that producers are going to simply move into a nearby jurisdiction while a greater number of them are going to simply ignore it and test the City’s reaction. It might be a small cost of business to take a fine and go bareback. We’ll see.
HLH5 was my favorite part of xLive.com. I spent more time there than anywhere else on the site – whether or not I’m working.
